  • About Berlin

The importance of Berlin as the epicentre of 20th-century history is indisputable.  Even today this exciting metropolis is at the heart of the new world order, shaping technology, science, architecture, commerce and the arts.  Berlin’s status as a top tourist destination therefore comes as no surprise.

Monday 9 November sees the culmination of events to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall www.mauerfall09.de.  The occasion will be marked that evening by the “Festival of Freedom” at the Brandenburg Gate.

Germany has invited all European Union leaders to attend ceremonies in November to mark the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Friday. Speaking to reporters after an informal EU summit in Brussels, Chancellor Angela Merkel said: "I invited all colleagues from the European Union to take part in our celebrations for the 20th anniversary of the Wall falling on November 9."

  •

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and French President Nicolas Sarkozy are among those expected in Berlin for the festivities, set to climax in a "freedom party" at Berlin's Brandenburg Gate.

The Soviet leader at the time, Mikhail Gorbachev, will also take part, as well as former United Nations secretary general Kofi Annan. One world leader not likely to attend is US President Barack Obama, who will be in Asia for a summit. The United States will likely instead be represented by former president Bill Clinton.

  • Trabant

    Trabant

How about seeing Berlin in a Trabant; the GDR’s archetypal (and now iconic) automobile. You can drive or be driven – you choose!

  • “Haus am Checkpoint Charlie “ (Mauermuseum).

“Haus am Checkpoint Charlie “ (Mauermuseum).

The division of Berlin in the shape of the Berlin Wall came to characterise the Cold War. Many aspects of life during those times are now captured in the fascinating “Haus am Checkpoint Charlie “ (Mauermuseum). From 1961 to 1990 Checkpoint Charlie was the third Allied checkpoint permitting non-Germans and diplomats access between East and West Berlin.

  • East Side Gallery

Alternatively, visit the East Side Gallery to see the longest and best preserved remnant of the Berlin Wall - 1.3 km long wall, open-air gallery. What’s more, it’s been renovated over the past 4 years, and November marks its re-opening!

Choosing Your Hotel Districts

  • Charlottenburg

    Charlottenburg Charlottenburg
  • Mitte

    Mitte Mitte
  • Tiergarten

    Tiergarten Tiergarten
  • Until reunification this area formed the centre of West Berlin and still today houses some of the best shopping in Berlin on and around the famous Kurfürstendamm (Ku’damm for short) – the KaDeWe (Kaufhaus des Westens) is the largest department store in Europe, with a food hall on the 6th floor to rival anywhere.  This area is closer to the Messe Berlin with more direct transport links via the S-Bahn.

  • The heart (or literally the middle) of unified Berlin, this once desolate ‘no-mans land’ between east and west boasts some of the city’s most important landmarks – the Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag, the austere TV tower on Alexanderplatz, Berliner Dom, Museumsinsel with some of Berlin’s best museums and arguably Berlin’s most beautiful square Gendarmenmarkt.

  • Now forms a vital link between the east and west of the city and therefore became the natural choice for the seat of government and the location for Berlin’s new main station.  This quarter houses most of the capital’s embassies and government buildings as well as Potsdamer Platz , a showcase to urban renewal with the Sony Center and DaimlerCity.
